Nowitzki will serve as NBA expert for Prime Video
Exciting news for NBA fans in Germany as Amazon Prime Video is making big moves in the basketball world. The Athletic reported that NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki will be joining Amazon's studio coverage team. This move by Amazon is part of their 11-year, nearly $20 billion agreement with the NBA, set to begin in the 2025-26 season.
This is a huge win for basketball enthusiasts worldwide who have admired Nowitzki's incredible long career, fun personality and insights into the game. But it's also a clear indicator of Amazon's global approach to broadcasting the NBA, adding one of the NBA's largest international stars ever.
Joining Nowitzki in the studio will be Blake Griffin, another former NBA star known for his dynamic play and charismatic personality. Hosting this star-studded lineup will be the talented Taylor Rooks (known from Prime Video's Thursday Night Football, Bleacher Report and NBA on TNT), whose expertise in sports journalism and interviewing skills are sure to elevate the entire broadcast. Ian Eagle is signed as the platform’s lead play-by-play caller.
It's clear that Amazon is following a similar strategy to their NFL "Thursday Night Football" coverage (with former players Ryan Fitzpatrick, Andrew Whitworth and Richard Sherman), focusing on fresh faces and a younger presentation with advanced tech innovations like "Shop The Show" or using AI play analysis while the action is happening (On TNF Amazon is predicting quarterback pressures & blitzes).
Next season the NBA TV landscape is changing massively with TNT Sports exiting. NBC/Peacock and Amazon will join ABC/ESPN as the trio of platforms to present the leagues’ action over the next decade.
According to André Voigt's Got Nexxt Podcast we will see NBA broadcasts in Germany next season also on Sky Sport. It's still unclear if DAZN will keep rights or if ProSiebenSat.1 extends their Free TV rights.
As a basketball fan, I'm excited to see Dirk back on the screen and I'm eagerly anticipating how this team will work together and what unique perspectives they'll bring to NBA coverage. With the landscape of sports broadcasting evolving rapidly, it's fantastic to see platforms like Amazon investing in young talent and innovative approaches.
What are your thoughts on these additions to Amazon's NBA coverage?
